Media release Aug 30th – Suspend driver, Project Safe Start

Suspended Driver

On the 26th of August 2021, at 12:15 pm, officers on patrol conducted a check a t traffic stop on on a Dodge Journey due to its validation sticker showing expired in April of 2020.  The driver  was unable to surrender his drivers license, but provided a name and date of birth and a check of his licence status returned that he was currently suspended from driver due to being in arrears fo Family Support payments.

As a result, a 45 yr old male from Strathroy has been charged pursuant to section 53(1) of the Highway Traffic Act for driving while under suspension. His vehicle was further impounded for a period of 7 days.

Motor Vehicle Collision

On the 27th of August 2021 at 1145 hours, Aylmer Police were dispatched to a motor vehicle collision involving two vehicles. Police arrived and located two vehicles blocking the northbound lanes of John Street South.

Police investigation revealed that 28 yr old female from Aylmer had been operating her 2016 Jeep Compass, St S at which point she stopped for traffic that had backed up at the intersection of John Street / Talbot Street.

At this time, a 75 yr old male from Aylmer was operating his 2010 Dodge Caravan, silver,  on Sydenham Street East. He stopped at the stop sign at John Street South, turned right (N/B) onto John Street South from Sydenham Street E, fails to see traffic had stopped and struck the rear of the Jeep causing minor damage.

Minor damage was caused to the rear driver’s side bumper of the Jeep that consisted of some dents and paint scrapes.

As a result of the investigation, the 75 yr old Aylmer man  was charged with Start from stopped position – not in safety contrary to s.142(2)  of the HTA.

 

 

 

Return to School Traffic Initiative – Project Safe Start

Project Safe Start is a traffic initiative being undertaken by the Aylmer Police.  This project has been developed to target aggressive driving and traffic compliance in or near the School Zones across the town of Aylmer.  It is timed to coincide with the return of kids to school after Labour Day and will be carried out through the first two weeks of school.  This year’s project will run from August 30th to September 10th .

The mission of the program is to deliver a high visibility, education and enforcement campaign which will provide both specific and general deterrence to motorists travelling in or near our School Zones.  By doing so, this will affect driver behaviour during the course of the School Year and will have lasting safety benefits for the members of the community.

Officers will be focusing on the five “S’s”:

  1. Speeding
  2. Seatbelts
  3. Stop Signs
  4. School Zones
  5. School Buses

 

The first phase of the program will be an education program commencing August 30th running until September 5th.  During this phase of the program, available resources will be directed towards the school zones getting the area motorists prepared for the return to school. Serious violations within the school zones will be enforced.

 

Phase 2 of the Project will commence on the morning of September 6th.  The program will then run during the weekdays from 0600 hrs until 1800 hrs until the end of the day September 10th. Phase 2 will be an Enforcement Campaign with the emphasis on zero tolerance.

Media Aug 23, Suspended driver, warrant arrest, impaired driver

Suspended Driver

On the 18th of August 2021, at 6:00am Aylmer officer conducting stationary radar on John St. N, stopped a 2014 Dodge Caravan for traveling 80km/h in a 50 km/h zone.  Further investigation determined that the 30 yr. old male driver was currently suspended from driving a motor vehicle due to previous unpaid fines.   The male was issued summons to attend Provincial Offences Court charged with Speeding and Driving while under suspension.

Warrant Arrest

On the 19th of August 2021 at 0715 am, Aylmer officers on patrol spotted a suspicious vehicle parked in a lot on Talbot St W.  Attached to the vehicle was a dealer plate that had been previously stolen from a car dealership in St. Thomas.  A 41 yr old male from Bayham was found inside the vehicle sleeping.   Police checks determined that a warrant for arrest existed for this male and he was taken into custody.   Further investigation resulted in recovery of several stolen power tools and equipment, which are linked to break and enters that had occurred in St. Thomas. .

The male was held for a bail hearing and was remanded into custody at the Elgin Middlesex Detention Centre

 

Impaired Driver

On the 23rd of August 2021 at 12:38 am, officers on patrol observed a 2019 Chev pickup travelling on Talbot St E.  The truck pulled in the parking lot of a business that was currently closed.  Officers approached the vehicle which contained 2 occupants.  The driver was spoken to and police detected an odour of alcoholic beverage on his breath and requested the vehicle documents and his drivers licence.   The driver exited the truck and police now observed signs of impairment and placed the driver under arrested for Impaired Operation.  The male was transported to the station for the purpose of conducting breath tests which resulted in the male’s blood alcohol concentration over double the legal limit.  A 32 yr old male from Aylmer was released to a future court date charged with Impaired Operation and Blood alcohol concentration in excess of 80 milligrams.  The vehicle was impounded for (7) days and an immediate 90 driver’s licence suspension has been imposed.

Impaired Driver

On the 13th of August 2021, at 10:55 am, Aylmer officers attended to the Tim Hortons on John St. N, for a report of a male driving his 2000 Toyota Tundra pick into the parking lot.  The male was observed leaving his vehicle and pouring a beer into a thermal mug.  Officers located the male and a roadside screening demand test was conducted resulting in a “Fail” being registered.  As a result of the fail being registered the 48 yr old male from Tillsonburg was taken into custody for operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration in excess of 80 milligrams.  Breath test at the station showed a blood alcohol concentration near double the legal limit.  As a result the male was released with a court date later in September, licence has been suspended for 90 days, and vehicle has been impounded for 7 days.

 

RIDE Program – Liquor Licence Act charge:

On the 14th of August 2021 at 01:20 am, Aylmer officers were conducting a RIDE Program on Talbot St. W.  75 vehicles had been checked with (2) Roadside Test conducted that resulted in a Pass.  One vehicle that entered the RIDE program had a passenger who was in possession of an open container of liquor.  As a result a 47 yr old female from London was charged with having liquor in an open container in other than a licensed premises, residence or private place contrary to the liquor licence act.

 

3  day suspension:

On the 14th of August at 8:50 pm officers observed a vehicle travelling at a high rate of speed on Talbot St. E.  A traffic stop was initiated at a 55 yr old Brantford male was found to be operating the vehicle.  Police detected that the driver had been consuming alcoholic beverage and a Roadside Screening demand test was conducting registering a “Warn”.  The male was issued a 3 day licence suspension, charged for speeding and the vehicle was towed from the scene.

 

House Fire:

On the 15th of August at 2:49 hrs. Aylmer Police and Aylmer Fire Department responded to a structure fire to a residence on Beech St. W.  Police attended for traffic support while Aylmer Fire battled the blaze.

The occupants were not home when the fire was detected by passerby and occupants of a neighbouring unit.  The cause of the fire is currently under investigation, however currently is not deemed suspicious.  Initially damage is believed to be a total loss.
